Moving from the Netherlands to Spain is a long move by road, but a simple one on paper: both countries are in the EU, so your household goods cross the borders without customs declarations. The work is in choosing the right type of transport, planning the long drive and handling registration in both countries.

Route and distance

The usual road route runs from the Netherlands through Belgium and France to Spain, entering Spain either on the Atlantic side near Irรบn or on the Mediterranean side near La Jonquera, depending on whether you are heading for Madrid and the west or for the Costa Brava, Valencia and the south-east.

Your transport options

Full load

Dedicated truck

One truck, one household, straight from your Dutch address to Spain. Under EU driving-time rules a truck driver cannot cover some 1,770 km in a single day, so ask how many days the transport takes and where the truck stops overnight.

Shared load

Groupage

Groupage services between the Benelux and Spain combine several households on one truck and drop them off along the way. Madrid and the Mediterranean coast lie on different routes, so your delivery date depends on where the other loads are going.

Drive yourself

Hired van

For a studio or a small flat, a hired van can work. Amsterdam to Madrid is roughly 1,770 km by road, too far to drive safely in one day, and you pay French motorway tolls, the one-way rental or the trip back.

What determines the price

We do not quote fixed prices. Volume in cubic metres, the services you book (packing, dismantling, storage, insurance) and your dates matter on every move; on this route, also look at:

  • Madrid or the coastThe interior and the Mediterranean coast are reached by different routes and distances.
  • Access in SpainIn old town centres or apartment blocks without a lift, a smaller shuttle vehicle or extra carrying may be needed.
  • FlexibilityAccepting a delivery window on a shared load instead of a fixed date.

Paperwork for an EU-to-EU move

There are no customs formalities for household goods moving between EU countries. You do still have administrative steps. In the Netherlands, tell your municipality that you are moving abroad so you are deregistered from the population register (BRP). In Spain, you will generally need a foreigner identification number (NIE) and, for stays longer than three months, registration as an EU resident; you should also register with the local town hall (empadronamiento).

If you take your car, it will eventually have to be registered in Spain. The European Commission's Your Europe portal explains the EU rules on residence formalities, car registration and travelling with pets (EU pet passport).

Planning your move, step by step

  1. Start

Make an inventory of what you are taking and get an estimate in the calculator.

  2. Step 2

Request quotes from several removers and compare what they include.

  3. Step 3

Deregister with your Dutch municipality within the time it asks for when you move abroad.

  4. Step 4

Apply for your NIE early; many practical steps in Spain (renting, utilities, a bank account) are easier once you have it.

  5. Step 5

Check the access at your Spanish address: narrow streets in older town centres or an apartment without a lift change how the delivery is done.

  6. Step 6

Decide what you will not take: a long-distance move is priced on volume, so a clear-out before you move pays off.

  7. Before moving day

Confirm the dates, the insurance cover and the delivery address in writing.
