Moving from the Netherlands to Portugal means a long road removal, crossing Belgium, France and Spain before you reach the Portuguese border. Because all four countries are in the EU, there are no customs declarations for your household goods; the effort goes into the transport choice and the registration steps.
Route and distance
The road route runs through Belgium and along the west of France, then across northern Spain into Portugal. Whether you end up in Porto and the north, in the Lisbon region or in the Algarve makes a real difference to the total distance.
| Between | Distance |
|---|---|
| Amsterdam โ Lisbon (by road) | โ 2,237 km |
| Amsterdam โ Lisbon (straight line) | โ 1,863 km |
| Rotterdam โ Porto (straight line) | โ 1,557 km |
| Utrecht โ Faro (straight line) | โ 1,963 km |
| Eindhoven โ Lisbon (straight line) | โ 1,814 km |
Straight-line distances are great-circle distances between city centres. The road distance comes from OpenStreetMap routing (OSRM) between the city centres, checked on 30 September 2026.
Your transport options
Full load
Dedicated truck
A dedicated truck takes your household to Portugal without transfers. Over about 2,237 km by road this means several days of driving for the crew, so agree in writing when loading and delivery take place.
Shared load
Groupage
Shared loads to Portugal may be grouped by region, for example the north around Porto versus Lisbon and the Algarve. You pay for the space you use, but delivery depends on when the remover has enough goods heading your way.
Drive yourself
Hired van
Driving a hired van to Portugal is a multi-day trip each way. Add up the one-way international rental or the drive back, fuel, motorway tolls in France, Spain and Portugal, and hotel nights, then compare that with a shared load.
What determines the price
We do not quote fixed prices. Volume in cubic metres, the services you book (packing, dismantling, storage, insurance) and your dates matter on every move; on this route, also look at:
- North or southThe Algarve adds a lot of distance compared with Porto and the north.
- TransfersWhether your goods stay on one vehicle or are reloaded at a depot along the way.
- TollsMotorway tolls in three countries are part of the transport cost on this route.
For an indicative figure, use the free moving calculator and compare written quotes.
Paperwork for an EU-to-EU move
Your furniture crosses three internal EU borders without a single declaration. The paperwork is about you: the Dutch municipality removes you from the BRP once you report that you are emigrating, and in Portugal almost everything starts with a tax number (NIF), from a lease to a bank account. EU citizens who stay longer than three months also register their residence with the local authorities.
The NIF itself is a matter for the Portuguese tax authority (Portal das Finanรงas). A Dutch-registered car has to be re-registered in Portugal in due course; the EU rules for that, for residence and for pets are on the European Commission's Your Europe portal.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a NIF before my goods arrive in Portugal?
A NIF is not a customs requirement for an EU move, but you will need one for most practical steps in Portugal, such as renting a home or setting up utilities, so it is sensible to arrange it early.
Is it better to drive a rental van myself?
For a small household it can be, but the distance is long and a one-way international van rental and the return journey add up. Compare it with a shared load before deciding.
